Decades of glitter, madness, androgyny, and singing have surrounded the longest-running theatrical release of all time. However, ask any super fan of The Rocky Horror Show what it is actually about, and you will probably get a stare as blank as Rocky’s. However, the community that this nonsensical film has created is what keeps everyone coming back.

Rocky Horror is THE cult film. I’d even argue it originated the idea. What makes a cult film is an initial flop upon release, only to be revived by a devoted fanbase that creates a die-hard fandom for something that would have never succeeded otherwise. The community surrounding Rocky Horror has adopted this nonsensical film and given it new meaning.

Inviting us into the world of sexuality and personality, Dr. Frank n Furter became an icon for queer youth who may have never seen anyone who looked the way they felt inside. This film was very groundbreaking for the time.

I think this unabashed display of sexuality and queerness was an awakening not only for those who were a part of the original release but for those who stumble upon the community of unapologetic freaks that still hold the film dear.
